About

Six styles of buttermilk fried chicken, from original to Nashville hot and sriracha honey, served walk-ins only in a metal-loving dive bar.

Bonehead is a fearless dive-bar-diner from the home of metal, serving buttermilk fried chicken in six signature styles: original seasoning (garlic mayo, lettuce, pickles), Lizard King (bourbon BBQ, shallots, slaw), Hot Head (Nashville hot, comeback dip), Buffalo (peppery, blue cheese or ranch), Dragon (sriracha honey, kewpie, sesame), and Lemon Head (zesty herb). Wings, tenders, and loaded burgers dominate; sides include Nashville fries (slaw, pickles, comeback sauce), Cinema fries (nacho cheese, hot salsa, jalapeños), and Garlic Parmesan Tots. One vegetarian option: Sweet Chilli Caulibuites. Walk-ins only, no reservations, cashless. Compact industrial-style bar downstairs showcases craft beers; 36-cover restaurant upstairs.

This was our second time visiting this place. The first time, we had a really, really great experience with the burgers everything was delicious and the quality was excellent. Unfortunately, this time our experience was a bit different. Two of our chicken burgers were not fully cooked, and the chicken had a slightly unpleasant smell. We still ate our meal, but for someone who is sensitive to the texture or taste of meat, this could be quite off-putting, as the cooking was not complete. I really hope this was just a one-time issue and that the quality doesn’t decline, because our first experience was excellent and we would love to come back again.

My search for the best fried chicken ended here. Forget the chains and all the American based chicken shops blighting our towns and cities. This place is the real deal. An independent delivering ridiculously good food in the heart of Birmingham. I went with my wife and daughter on a sunny Friday afternoon. There was a small wait as the place was busy. I had the Bonehead Pilsner whilst waiting and it went down too easy.. The waiting staff were friendly and polite and explained the offerings. I opted for the Nashville Hot Bowl that consisted of a chicken thigh and leg, Nashville waffle fries, Cajun corn on the cob, coleslaw, pickles and 'Comeback' sauce. The chicken was fried to perfection. Crispy beautifully coated skin and juicy in the middle. The best Nashville Hot chicken I've tried in this country. We also had the Buffalo Burger with ranch sauce and a Lizard King burger with Cinema fries (like cinema nachos but with waffle fries). Again all brilliantly cooked and I should mention the burger buns too were really good at holding everything together. The interior is pretty cool giving off 'Rock' vibes. Nice selection of music too that wasn't too loud. If you want the best fried chicken in Birmingham give this place a try. I will most definitely be going back.

Questions

7See all
Can I bring kids to Bonehead?

Yes, children are welcome at Bonehead until 20:00, after which it operates as an adult-only bar. It's a loud, rock-music dive bar rather than a family restaurant, so it suits older kids and teenagers best during the earlier hours.

Do I need to book a table, or can I just turn up?

Bonehead is strictly walk-ins only, they don't take reservations. It's a small venue with around 36 seats, so arriving early or outside peak weekend hours gives you the best chance of getting in quickly.

How busy does it get, and when is the best time to visit?

Bonehead is a popular, compact spot that regularly fills up, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Weekday lunchtimes or early evenings (Tuesday-Thursday) tend to be quieter and a better bet if you want to walk straight in.
